Medical disorders such as acid reflux are caused by physiological and environmental factors. There are many acid reflux causes that one could enumerate. However everything could be categorized into 2 major factors and those are improper lifestyle habit and inherent physical disorder. Acid Reflux Disease is a condition where stomach fluids flow up into the esophagus. It could damage the esophageal nerves and lining and can have numerous complications on other internal organs. First, acid reflux is caused by abnormal contractions of the lower esophageal sphincter causing it to open inappropriately. The sphincter is designed by nature to open when one swallows to allow the passage of food and liquid to the lower esophagus and into the stomach. If the sphincter is damaged or showed signs of abnormality, it opens up involuntarily thus allowing the harmful contents of the stomach to flow back up into the throat. In small children this is manifested by constant spitting up and vomiting. In adults, heartburn can be felt and serious damage to the esophagus, larynx, and lungs is very probable. The condition may be due to genetic abnormality or the esophagus may be damaged by previous diseases. In babies, the sphincter can be dislocated due to misplaced alignment of cervical vertebrae as a result of difficult labor. Needles to say, acid reflux causes are due to minor or severe physical aberrations. Some can be corrected through surgery while others can be corrected by medications. In children, chiropractic medicine can correct misalignment of sphincter.

The second cause of esophageal reflux and perhaps the most common in most cases is due to improper diet and lifestyle. Unbalanced diet can cause acid producing cells to double its production. Fatty food intake could be the major reason in excessive acid production. Another major reason is heavy alcohol consumption and smoking. These two bad habits are generally known to produce significant amount of acids in stomach. Heavy consumption of soy rich foods, dairy products, cows milk, and corn based foods are contributing factors in excessive stomach acids production. These environmental factors are the easiest to correct. All you need is self-discipline to maintain a healthy body.

There are also inappropriate lifestyle habits that contribute to acid reflux. Skipping meals and then gorging yourself and splurging in food could accelerate acid production. It should also be noted that heavy meals at night or before bedtime can increase the risk of heartburn and acid reflux. One should practice healthy habits to prevent chronic acid reflux. In small children, excessive feeding is also not good for their stomach, it may cause childhood acid reflux disease. The stomach should be allowed enough leeway to rest in order for it to function optimally. Abusing our body could only result to numerous medical disorders such as acid reflux disease.
