Acid reflux disease is a medical condition in which liquids from the stomach flow back to the upper esophagus and sometimes reaching the area of the throat. Symptoms of acid reflux disease could be painful and may cause extreme discomfort and can damage the esophagus. It is caused by a disorder in the upper digestive system particularly the esophagus, and can be aggravated by bad eating habits and unhealthy diet.

In treating the disease, it is very important to determine the primary acid reflux causes in certain individuals. One should seek prompt medical advice in order to avoid complications from the disease. If reflux is caused by abnormal production of stomach acid, temporary relief could be achieved by suppressing stomach acid accumulation through the use of antacids. There are three types of antacids. It could be aluminum, calcium or magnesium based and all three have been proven to suppress acid accumulation. However, relief from antacids usually last for only an hour or two. When the medicine disintegrates and washed away from the stomach, acid accumulation starts immediately and sometimes the rebound could be quite so fast and the volume of acid redoubles. Antacids could be supplemented by other medicines such as histamine antagonists or h2 antagonists. This medicine suppresses acid accumulation by neutralizing acid-producing histamines. It could be very effective in minimizing the main symptom of acid reflux and it lasts quite longer than antacids.

Some medical practitioners offer natural remedies for acid reflux disease. These alternative forms of medical practices are becoming popular in treating and managing reflux. One form of alternative treatment is through chiropractic therapy. There are also very unconventional methods such as Eastern medicine, herbal treatment, and acupuncture. These alternative treatments target the symptoms and the cause of the ailment. There are patients who showed signs of improvement after undergoing alternative forms of healing. However, some medical experts could not determine the scientific basis of such practices and further research is being done in establishing the effectiveness of alternative treatment.

For worse cases of acid reflux, surgery could be the final solution to end the malady. The surgical procedure is commonly called reflux surgery where the lower esophageal sphincter is corrected and the opening of the diaphragm where the esophagus passes is tightened. There are modern ways to undergo surgical procedures even without abdominal incision. Punctures are created on the abdomen and fiber optic viewing tubes and surgical devices are inserted. This procedure is considered minor surgery and a shorter stay in the hospital is possible.
