Treating Acid Reflux
The Key To Treating Acid Reflux Disease
Proper diagnosis of gastro esophageal reflux disease or GERD is very important in treating acid reflux. Diagnosis and evaluations of doctors are usually based on the known symptoms of acid reflux disease. There are a number of methods to diagnose reflux disease. Knowing them could guide patients in seeking the proper medical treatments available to them.
The simplest type of diagnosis and evaluation is through therapeutic trial. Doctors often ask patients some common symptoms associated with GERD and will usually focus on the episodes of heartburn acid reflux. This disorder is the most common symptoms of GERD and it is usual to have acid reflux disorders if you periodically experience heartburns. If a symptom has been confirmed, initial treatment with antacids or acid suppressing drugs can be given to patients. If the patient with suspected acid reflux disease responds to the treatment with a significant improvement in reflux suppression, then GERD is confirmed and no further test is forthcoming. This could be the cheapest and easiest method in diagnosing symptoms of acid reflux disease. However, if other illness with similar symptomatic characteristics as those of GERD is present, it will not be diagnosed at all.
Another type of diagnosis one can undergo in determining the existence of GERD is through stomach acid testing. This type of diagnosis is usually very helpful in determining the amount of acid in the stomach and the frequency of the occurrence of GERD. A tube with sensor at the tip, passing through the nose, will be placed just above the outermost limit of the esophagus. The test is done within a 24 and 48 hour time frame. When acid reflux is detected by the sensor it will be duly recorded by a computer chip especially designed just for that. Patients are also asked to jot down the time when symptoms of acid reflux occur. When the test is finished, the recorded data and the manual recording of the patient will be compared to attest to the fact that symptoms are indeed caused by GERD.
There are more complicated ways of diagnosing GERD patients and it involve internal and direct examination of the esophagus. Endoscopy uses visual methods to diagnose acid reflux disorders. A small camera attached to a very fine tube is swallowed by patients. Doctors will have visual impressions of the throat, larynx, pharynx, upper esophagus and lower esophageal sphincter. Any inflammations or damages to the esophageal linings can be seen by the attending specialist. If ulcers have developed in the esophagus, it can also be easily detected. GERD can be diagnosed accurately using endoscopic technology and proper medication and treatment can be applied. Moreover, any complications caused by GERD to the esophagus or larynx can also be discerned and can be given due medical attention.
Proper diagnosis is very crucial in treating gastroesophageal reflux disease. Patients can now avail of different methods of evaluating their reflux disorders. Use of modern technologies helped greatly in giving correct medical diagnosis so that patients can be treated accurately and complications prevented.
